    How to apply?

    Why?

The Lab in Residence proposal works on decentralization of artistic production from large urban centers to rural areas. How do interdependencies undermined between urban and rural worlds happen? How are these two contexts connected and/or dissociated into their everyday experiences? Displacement, as well as exchange, has a transformative action on paradigm, view, practice and production in both contexts? Considering nature as a group of biosystems and online intelligences networked, these Altered Fields points to small emergencies within the infinite experiences of re-cartographing, in small and large scales, creating new representations of old constellations, in processes that demonstrate these places’ potential to resilience.

    Laboratory in Residence

    Dynamics
Proposals related to participatory experiences may be held at Santa Teresa and/ or non-formal education spaces. rural.scapes has partnered with CRAS (Social Assistance Reference Center) and the Rural Union, as well as an agreement with the Department of Education of São Jose do Barreiro, which enables the residents to use the space of the schools. The applicant may suggest spaces and describe the dynamics of work, such as collaborative projects, collective and participatory experiences, as well as writing his/her work plan with the community through workshops, seminars, performance, etc.

    Open Labs
Lectures and debates will take part during the development of the projects, in the presence of an art critic or other professional of the area.

    Open Talks
Talks will be scheduled at rural.scapes’ main house, CRAS, Projeto Guri or/and at Clubão (local multi-use spaces), in São José do Barreiro, intended to promote further exchange between the artists in residency and the local community.

    Exhibition
Among the resulting works of the residency, a curated selection can be presented at the end of each residency period at the main house of Santa Teresa Farm in São José do Barreiro, as well as in the city of São Paulo, place and date to be confirmed.

    – Projects related to research and creation of artwork and interventions through ‘Rural InterMedia’, defined as the use and knowledge of existing technologies in the rural environment, traditionally based in the DIY culture (Do It Yourself);

    – Innovative projects involving low-cost technologies.

    Selection Criteria

rural.scapes – Lab in Residency program will select projects of different technological supports, analogical and/or digital, where technique, art and handicraft build essays out of their relationship with ‘technology’, here considered as the general technical and scientific knowledge. The program will accept proposals based on the idea of transforming the use of local (electro-mechanic) tools, processes, materials and/or infrastructures (integrated circuits), creating connections between local and global (on-line/ off line network) contexts, considering the specific territory of the residency as base for their development.

The selected projects must relate with the local context. We will consider projects that work on Tropeiros Road’s local surrounding elements, between the cities of Silveiras and Bananal, including Queluz, Areias, São José do Barreiro and Arapeí.

    Selection process – International jury

    – Five professionals, 2 Brazilians and 3 from abroad will gather at Santa Teresa Farm to evaluate and select the proposals.

    – Proposes focusing on the premises of this open call, quality and viability of its execution in the period of the residency.

    – Proposals will be analysed and selected also according to their viability in the local context. Each proposal’s needs must be described in the application form, in the field “Equipment and Tools”.

    – The applicant’s proposal will be the key element of evaluation. Name, portfolio and career level of the applicants will be considered as complementary information.

    – Applicants may be contacted by the jury to discuss further details of the proposal, aiming alternative solutions, when challenges are found regarding the project’s viability within the existing conditions at rural.scapes.

    – Pre-selected artists will be interviewed via Skype in the beginning of June. After the interviews, the final list of selected projects will be defined.

    – The applicants are required to develop and finish the production of the selected proposal during the period of residency. The selected proposal can suffer changes, as long as they relate to the original proposal chosen by the jury.
